Chelsea has parted ways with head coach Liam Rosenior after just 106 days in charge, following a 3-0 defeat at Brighton that extended the club’s scoreless Premier League run to five games.
Rosenior, who joined in January on a five-and-a-half-year deal from Strasbourg — also owned by Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital — oversaw only 11 wins in 23 matches across all competitions.
Tuesday’s loss at the Amex was Chelsea’s fifth straight league defeat without scoring, their worst such run since 1912. Rosenior called the display “indefensible” and “unacceptable” as travelling fans turned on the team on the south coast.
The result leaves the Blues seventh in the Premier League, seven points adrift of Liverpool in fifth, the final Champions League spot.
Club Statement
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season,” Chelsea said. “This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.”
Record Under Rosenior Overall:
11 wins in 23 games Premier League: 5 wins from 13 FA Cup: 4 wins against lower-league sides to reach the semi-finals Current form: 5 league defeats, 0 goals scored
What’s Next
Calum McFarlane will take interim charge until the end of the season. The assistant stepped in earlier this year for a 1-1 draw with Manchester City and a loss at Fulham after Enzo Maresca was dismissed in January.
“As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment,” Chelsea added.
