Hearts of Oak legend and former captain, Amankwah Mireku, has strongly refuted claims by former CEO Harry Zakour that each player of the 2000 CAF Champions League-winning team received $100,000.
Mireku, who captained the Phobians to that historic triumph over Esperance of Tunisia, described Zakour’s claim as false.
Speaking in an interview on Sporty FM, Mireku said: “What Harry Zakour said is a blatant lie. None of us received $100,000. If we received $100,000 at that time, some of us wouldn’t be struggling today.”
“We sacrificed for Hearts of Oak. We made history for Ghana, but we were not given that amount. He should show proof of payment.”
The rebuttal comes after Zakour, in an earlier interview on the same station, claimed the club received $3 million for winning the 2000 CAF Champions League and paid $100,000 each to all 18 players in the squad.
Mireku’s comments have reignited the long-standing debate over how the iconic 64 Battalion team was rewarded after winning Hearts of Oak’s first and only CAF Champions League title.
