Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has appointed former Netherlands international Stanley Purl Menzo as Director of Football, the club announced Monday as part of its long-term strategy to return the Porcupine Warriors to domestic and continental dominance.

The 62-year-old Dutchman joins effective immediately, with the Board of Directors tasking him to strengthen technical leadership, modernize football operations, and restore Kotoko to the summit of African football.
Menzo arrives with one of the most decorated résumés in Kotoko’s history. A distinguished goalkeeper and manager, he spent 10 seasons at AFC Ajax, making over 300 appearances and winning nine major titles including the 1986–87 European Cup Winners’ Cup and the 1992 UEFA Cup.
He was also a full international for the Netherlands at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and at the European Championship. Known as one of the first “ball-playing” goalkeepers, his forward-thinking style helped shape the modern game. He also played for PSV, Lierse and Bordeaux.
Since retiring, Menzo has built a management career across three continents. His coaching stints include FC Volendam, SC Cambuur and Lierse in Europe, Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, Beijing Guoan in China, and the national teams of Aruba and Suriname. He was in charge of Suriname for their just-ended World Cup campaign and served as Netherlands goalkeeping coach under Marco van Basten in 2004.
In his new role, Menzo will take charge of Kotoko’s overall football direction. That includes technical strategy, player recruitment and retention, youth development, and aligning the academy with the senior team to create a single football identity.
He will also oversee all technical matters until the club appoints a substantive head coach for the senior side.
Executive Chairman Mr. James Osei Brown said the appointment fits Kotoko’s ambitions:
“Stanley Menzo brings a rare combination of elite playing experience, proven leadership and genuine global perspective. His footballing philosophy aligns with the standards and ambitions of this great institution, and we are confident that his expertise will help us build a sustainable, winning structure of which our supporters can be proud. We are thrilled to welcome him to the club.”
Menzo described joining Kotoko as an “honour”:
“It is an honour to join a club of the stature and history of Asante Kotoko. The passion of the supporters and the ambition of the leadership made this an easy decision. I look forward to working with the technical team, the players and the entire Kotoko family to build something special and to compete for the trophies this club deserves.”
The club said further details on Menzo’s backroom structure and technical plans for the 2026/27 season will be communicated in due course.
