Accra is set to welcome the biggest badminton Grand Slam tournament in the world as the Borteyman Sports Complex hosts a five-day World Ranking Event from August 12th to 16th, 2026.
The tournament doubles as a qualifier for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, meaning fans can expect intense competition across all categories as top players chase crucial ranking points.
The Grand Slam will feature all five Olympic disciplines:
- Men’s Singles
- Women’s Singles
- Men’s Doubles
- Women’s Doubles
- Mixed Doubles
With Olympic qualification on the line, the tournament is expected to attract elite shuttlers from across the world.
Team Ghana will be led by the country’s top-ranked player Francis Obeng-Shang, who goes into the tournament in top form and ready to battle for the title on home soil.
Also, one to watch is Ofori-Acheampong Brempong, currently ranked 4th in Men’s Singles, 2nd in Men’s Doubles and 7th in Mixed Doubles. His versatility across three events makes him a key medal hope for the hosts.
University of Ghana’s Andy Amofa is also set to make his mark. The youngster is currently ranked 1st in the Men’s U-19 category and will be looking to announce himself against senior competition.
Speaking ahead of the event, President of Badminton Ghana, Mr. Evans Yeboah, described it as the biggest badminton tournament Ghana has ever hosted. “I expect all players to bring their A-game,” Yeboah said.
The hosting of a Grand Slam and Olympic qualifier marks a major milestone for badminton in Ghana and is expected to boost the sport’s profile across the country.
