The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially launched the 2026/27 Colts Football season at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The ceremony, held on Tuesday, September 16, 2026, brought together key stakeholders in Ghana football, including all Regional Football Association (RFA) Chairpersons, members of the GFA Executive Council, ex-players and members of the National Juvenile Committee.
The event was held to set the tone for the new Colts season and to reaffirm the GFA’s commitment to grassroots football development.
GFA President and 2nd Vice President of CAF, Kurt Okraku, highlighted the importance of Colts football as the foundation of Ghana football, describing it as the main platform for nurturing young talents and providing a clear pathway into organised football.
“Six years ago, we set out to revive Colts football. Today, we can confidently say that the system is alive. But we are not satisfied,” he said. “We are determined to create a system that ensures no Ghanaian football talent is left behind.”
Mr Okraku reiterated that when the decision was made to revive and restructure Colts football, the aim was to rebuild a pathway from the community to the regional level, from the regional level to elite development, and ultimately from grassroots football to the national teams and the professional game.
He disclosed that over the past two seasons, the GFA has invested GHS 1.8 million to train 600 Colts coaches through the GFA-funded CAF Licence D Coaching Programme.
“Through our Colts football, Ashanti Region leads with the highest number of Colts clubs with 245, followed by Greater Accra with 216. Brong Ahafo and Northern have 98 each, Central has 90, Western 50, Eastern 26, Upper East 15, Upper West 11 and Volta 10,” he said.
“We have invested GHS 800,000 through the Regional Football Associations to organise Elite U-15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues. We have also created U-15 and U-17 girls competitions as part of our Colts structure.
”The GFA President further appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to make government-owned AstroTurf facilities free for Colts clubs to ease their access and boost grassroots development.
The Colts football season is expected to kick off across all regions in the coming weeks, with thousands of young players expected to participate.
