Ghanaian prodigy Godfred Opoku narrowly missed out on a medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships, finishing 4th in a stacked Men’s 400m final in Eugene, Oregon.
The 17-year-old ran a brilliant 45.46 seconds — a personal best — to cross the line just behind South Africa’s Leendert Koekemoer who took bronze in 44.96s.
It capped an impressive championship run for Opoku, who announced himself on the global stage with a 45.91s run to qualify for the semi-finals before advancing to the grand final.
The final featured the top junior quarter-milers on the planet, and Opoku held his own from lane to lane.
American duo Jayden Deleon and Quincy Wilson dominated for gold and silver in 44.47s and 44.62s respectively. Koekemoer of South Africa grabbed bronze in 44.96s, leaving Opoku 0.50s off the podium in 4th.

Opoku finished ahead of highly rated talents including Zion Davies of the Bahamas, Mohammed Ashfaq of India, Malachi Austin of Guyana, and Milann Klemenic of France.
Despite missing the podium, Opoku’s performance marks a major breakthrough for Ghana athletics. To run 45.46s in a World U20 final at 17 years old puts him among the fastest juniors in Ghana’s history and signals big things ahead for the quarter-miler.
He went from running 45.91s in the semis to dropping nearly half a second in the final — proof of his composure and fight on the biggest stage. Ghana can be proud. Godfred Opoku has shown he belongs with the world’s best, and with more experience, a World U20 medal looks well within reach.
