President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect.
The decision forms part of a broader directive by the President to dissolve the boards of nine state institutions across key sectors, including sports, petroleum, banking, mining and infrastructure.
According to a statement from the Presidency dated Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and signed by Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the relevant sector ministers have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the dissolution in accordance with the applicable laws and governing instruments of the affected institutions.
The Presidency clarified that the dissolution does not amount to the permanent removal of the governing structures. The boards are expected to be reconstituted in due course, with new members subsequently appointed to oversee their operations.
The dissolved NSA Board, which was constituted for the 2025-2029 period and sworn in on December 15, 2025, was chaired by Dr. Fred Awaah.
Other members included NSA Director-General, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah; Fuseini Bawa of the National Sports College; Samuel Duku Sarfo of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation; Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh of the Ministry of Finance; Is-Haku Alhassan of the Ministry of Education; Col. Richard Kofi Akoto of the Security Services Sports Association; Dr. Luguterah Austin Wontepaga representing tertiary institutions; Samson Deen of the National Paralympic Committee; and Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee.
The move comes amid public concern over deteriorating facilities such as the Accra and Baba Yara stadia and as Ghana prepares for key international assignments.
