Kumasi Asante Kotoko have won the 2026 Democracy Cup after beating arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The Democracy Cup, organised by the Parliament of Ghana, drew members from both the Majority and Minority to Kumasi. In attendance were the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, MP for South Dayi, Hon. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, and Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei.
Both sides struggled to find the breakthrough in regulation time. Kotoko captain Musah Hamzata marshalled the defence superbly, while Hearts veteran attacker John Antwi led the attack but was kept quiet by the Porcupine Warriors’ backline.
The best chances fell to Kotoko’s Hubert Gyau and Emmanuel Mamah in the second half, but Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare in the Hearts post was equal to the task. At the other end, Danlad Ibrahim made some crucial saves to keep the scoreline at 0-0.
With no winner after 90 minutes, the trophy was decided on penalties, with Kotoko triumphing to lift the Democracy Cup – reclaiming the trophy they won in the maiden edition in 2024.
Speaking after the game, winning coach Eric Tinkler said: “I’m very pleased with our performance. The guys did exceptionally well and I’m proud of the boys. But it’s still work in progress. “
Kotoko take home the trophy and bragging rights ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
