GLASGOW, Scotland — Ghana’s Amadu Mohammed will leave the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a bronze medal after a narrow points defeat to Australia’s Jye Dixon in the men’s Bantamweight -55kg semi-final at SEC Hall 5 on Friday.
The bout was decided 4-1 on points, ending Mohammed’s bid for a place in the final and gold medal match.
Mohammed started brightly, taking Round 1 unanimously 10-9 on all five judges’ scorecards to put Ghana ahead early.
But Dixon fought back. The Australian took Round 2 on four of the five cards, and then swept Round 3 on every card 10-9 to seal the victory.
The final tally told the story of a close contest:-
*Judge 1: 29-28 to Mohammed –
*Judges 2, 3, 4 & 5*: 29-28 to Dixon.
Dixon advances while Mohammed exits with bronze for Ghana in the men’s division.Speaking to the media after the fight, a visibly disappointed Mohammed said the result was not what he had worked for.
“I’m not happy. This is not what I expected. I do have faith in God, but this is not the target. This is not what I expected,” he said.
The Ghanaian boxer had gone into Glasgow 2026 with gold on his mind, and admitted the bronze felt like a missed opportunity.
“I beg every Ghanaian who believes in me that I will bring gold medal and I’ve won the bronze. I’m not happy about it. All I can say is give glory and honor to God. He has done his best giving us another hope,” he added.
Despite the heartbreak, Mohammed urged fans back home to stay behind Team Ghana.
“I beg each and every one who is supporting me that they shouldn’t give up. Keep supporting. We will surely be what they want,” he concluded.
Mohammed’s bronze adds to Ghana’s medal tally to two, one silver and and one bronze.
