Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Akpokavie has thrown his weight behind the 2026 African Seniors Athletics Championship, saying the event is a huge opportunity for Ghana to showcase its athletic prowess.
Speaking at the launch of the championship at the Tennis Court of the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, Akpokavie expressed his excitement about hosting the event. “For us at the Ghana Olympic Committee, it’s exciting that Ghana Athletics is hosting the African Championships. It offers us in Ghana an opportunity to host the best athletes from Africa,” he said.

Akpokavie also highlighted the benefits for local athletes, saying, “For us, it also means that our athletes will be offered the opportunity to compete in front of Ghanaians.” He emphasized the importance of involving schools and students in the event, adding that arrangements should be made to bus students from senior high schools across the country to the stadium to watch the top athletes from Africa.
“Athletics has been one of our key achievements at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and other top multi-sport events, so it is important that we support Ghana Athletics and wish them all the best,” Akpokavie said, committing the Ghana Olympic Committee’s support to ensure the event’s success.

The 2026 African Athletics Championships is expected to attract top athletes from across the continent and will take place from May 12 to 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
