MoU Signed: Ghana to Host 24th CAA African Senior Athletics Championships

Ghana has formally been confirmed as the host nation for the 24th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from May 12th to 17th, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Legon, Accra.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Confederation of African Athletics and Ghana Athletics, with the Government of Ghana’s commitment affirmed by Sports and Recreation Minister, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adam.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by a distinguished delegation from the Confederation of African Athletics, led by President Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Lamine Fati. Also present were CAA Region II delegates, headed by Chief Tonobok Okowa, First Vice President of CAA and President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

Ghana Athletics President Mr. Bawah Fuseini, Ghana Olympic Committee President, Richard Akakpovie Esq, National Sports Authority Board Chairman, Dr. Fred Awaah, and Deputy Director-General (Technical) Madam Veronica Commey were also in attendance, with other Executives of Ghana Athletics.

The MoU signifies Ghana’s acceptance of hosting responsibilities and commitment to meeting all technical and organisational requirements. Delegations from CAA and Ghana Athletics have begun stakeholder engagements, including courtesy calls on the National Sports Authority and Ghana Olympic Committee, and an inspection visit to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The championships are expected to bring together elite athletes from across Africa, consolidating Ghana’s standing as a preferred destination for major international sporting events.
