The maiden edition of the Functional Sport tournament National Championship took place on November 23-24, 2024, at the Zulka Astro Turf and Idrowhyt Event Centre in Dansoman. The two-day event brought together 12 athletes from six regions: Greater Accra, Western Region, Central Region, Bono Region, Ashanti Region, and Northern Region.
The championship consisted of six tests, divided into two days. Day one featured the endurance, mixed, and bodyweight tests, while day two comprised the skill, strength, and power tests.
The winner of the maiden championship, Awal Mohammed, a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), expressed his excitement about the victory. “This win will motivate me to train harder and defend my title next year,” he said.
Mohammed also thanked the organizers for providing a platform to showcase his skills. “I thank the organizers for their encouragement, support, and motivation. Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to showcase our talents to the nation.”
Charles Owusu Ansah, President of Functional Fitness League Ghana, expressed his surprise at the winner. “I didn’t expect Awal to win, especially since he joined the tournament late. However, his victory is an achievement, and we’re grateful for his participation.”
Ansah also outlined plans to prepare the athletes for international tournaments. “We’ll engage them in training and work with professionals to help them improve. Functional Sports has come to stay, and we’ll develop the sport across the country.”
The top five athletes received prizes, including cash awards, certificates, medals, and products from sponsors. The winners were:
- Awal Mohammed (68 points) – GH¢ 1,500.00, certificate, gold medal, National trophy, championship trophy, hamper, and products from sponsors.
- Charles Adamah (59 points) – GH¢ 1,000.00, certificate, silver medal, trophy, hamper, and products from sponsors.
- Isaac Amoako (53 points) – GH¢ 700.00, certificate, bronze medal, trophy, hamper, and products from sponsors.
- Isaac Ewusi (51 points) – certificate and products from sponsors.
- Isaac Owusu (51 points) – certificate and products from sponsors.
