Morocco Dominate Brazil But Settle for Draw in World Cup Opener

Morocco outplayed five-time champions Brazil for long stretches and came within minutes of a historic World Cup upset, only to be denied by a moment of Vinicius Jr magic in a 1-1 draw at MetLife Stadium in New York New Jersey.

The Atlas Lions stunned the Selecao in the 21st minute. Ismael Saibari capitalized on a communication breakdown between Alisson Becker, Gabriel and Marquinhos, lifting the ball over the onrushing keeper from outside the area. It was the first goal Morocco have ever scored against South American opposition at the World Cup, after failing to find the net against Peru in 1970 and Brazil in 1998.

Mohamed Ouahbi’s side kept their foot on the gas. By the 30th minute they had fired 12 shots — the most Brazil had conceded in a World Cup match since Mexico in 2018. Morocco’s intensity, pressing and quick transitions repeatedly exposed gaps in Brazil’s defense, with Carlo Ancelotti’s team struggling to settle.

Brazil equalized 13 minutes before halftime when Vinicius Jr scored against the run of play on his 50th cap. But even after that, Morocco continued to dictate tempo. Lucas Paqueta’s acrobatic effort just before the break was Morocco’s only real scare.

With Brazil legends Ronaldo, Kaka and Roberto Carlos watching from the stands, the second half followed a similar pattern. Chances were few, but Morocco looked the more threatening side. Raphinha missed Brazil’s best chance late on, failing to connect with Bruno Guimaraes’ low cross.

The draw keeps Morocco’s search for a first opening-match World Cup win going, but their performance sent a clear message: the African champions dominated Brazil and deserved more. Meanwhile, Brazil’s 92-year record of avoiding defeat in tournament openers survives, though barely.
