The Ghana Armwrestling Federation held a basic coaching course on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at the Accra Sports Stadium, in preparation for the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship.

Over 20 coaches participated in the exercise, aimed at enhancing their technical capabilities to identify and develop new talent.

“We are expecting to host the African championship, which will serve as a qualifier for the African Games,” said Mr. Hussein Akueteh Addy, Head of Referees, Africa Armwrestling. “As technical people, we need to fortify our structures, especially coaches, to scout for talent in schools and security services.”

The course focused on training coaches from security services and selected schools to identify and groom talent for the championship.
Mr. Addy expressed satisfaction with the turnout, considering the short notice given. “The turnout is okay, but I would have loved to see more participants. We will conduct more seminars and certify those who demonstrate a good grasp of the technical aspects and rules.”
Participant Richard Boafo, a P.E. teacher from Wesley Grammar Senior High, praised the experience. “I’ve learned a lot and will share my new skills with my students. We’ll start a team soon; it’s a great sport that needs more exposure.”

Boafo believes armwrestling is a professional sport that can be promoted in Ghana. “People have misconceptions about it, but it’s something we used to play at home. We’re learning new skills, and it will become a professional sport people will take seriously.”
