The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie Esq., has commended Team Ghana’s performance at the maiden African School Games in Algeria.

Despite the short notice and limited preparation time, Mr. Akpokavie expressed satisfaction with the team’s achievement.

“I was happy about Ghana’s performance in Algeria because the Games were impromptu, and there was no proper preparation towards it,” he said. “The athletes were even in school before we brought them into camp just for them to go to camp, so preparation was not at its best. I was happy with the performance and what we got.”

Mr. Akpokavie noted that the GOC is already looking forward to the next edition of the Games, scheduled to take place in Abuja, Nigeria in 2027. “The next one is in two years’ time, so we have a plan, and we know how to plan well for that one,” he said. “We will be more prepared, and we will prepare the athletes better, so we will see more medals in that Games.”

The GOC President emphasized the importance of preparation in achieving success in sports. “Everything is about preparation,” he said. “If you don’t prepare, it means whatever you are doing, you’re just doing it for the sake of it.”

Mr. Akpokavie also highlighted the challenge of funding, stating that the GOC is working to secure funds to ease the pressure from the government. “The only thing left is money, and we have already engaged the government and are trying to raise some funds to help ease the pressure from the government.”
