Ghana Athletics, in conjunction with the Winneba Sports College, is presenting a World Athletics Level 1 Coaching Course from June 8 to June 14, 2025, at the National Sports College in Winneba. The course aims to build the capacity of Ghanaian coaches and enhance the development of athletics in the country.

According to Bawah Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics, the course is part of the organization’s efforts to develop the skills of coaches. “It’s one of our programs that we want to build the capacity of our coaches,” he said. “The certificate will come from World Athletics, and the lecturers are well-certified.”

The Level 1 Coaching Course is the basic level, and successful participants can progress to Level 2, which specializes in specific areas such as sprints, long distance, jumps, or throws. Level 3, also known as elite training, focuses on training athletes for Olympic and World Championship levels.

To participate in the Level 1 Coaching Course, coaches need to meet certain criteria, including completing a basic coaching course. Bawah Fuseini explained, “If you don’t have the basic, you can’t do the Level 1. We introduced the basic course to prepare coaches for Level 1, and the pass rates have been encouraging.”

The course will cover 13 areas, including coaching philosophy, injury prevention, and performance maintenance. Bawah Fuseini noted, “The topics are derived from World Athletics, and only well-trained lecturers will facilitate the course.”

The President of Ghana Athletics expects a high pass rate for the course, aiming for over 80%. “The last time we did it in Kumasi, we had about 75% passes,” he said. “I’m looking for more than 80% passes this time around.”

The course will be facilitated by experienced professionals, including Dr. Austin Luguterah, Mr. Apidogo Baba, and Mr. Christopher Darko Amankrah.
