The President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, Miss Rafatu Inusah, is appealing to the government and corporate bodies for support as the national team, the Ghana Rugby Eagles, prepares to participate in the Rugby Africa Men’s 7s tournament in Mauritius.
The competition is scheduled to take place on June 21-22, 2025, at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius. Miss Rafatu Inusah explained that the team will travel to Mauritius ahead of time to acclimatize with the weather and play some friendly matches.
“We are going to go ahead of time to acclimatize with the weather there and then to play some few matches,” Miss Rafatu said. “Our first match is against Uganda, the defending champions. We have players coming from South Africa, France, UK, and our local-based players. Everybody wants to be in the team.”
Despite the tournament’s proximity, Miss Rafatu revealed that the Ghana Rugby Football Union has received no support from the government. “Currently, we have zero support from the government, but we are not giving up,” she said. “We know there are many other sports competing for limited budgets from the Ministry and National Sports Authority.”
Miss Rafatu welcomed corporate bodies and government agencies to support the Ghana Rugby Eagles. “We are warmly welcoming all corporate bodies and government bodies to come to the aid of the Ghana Rugby Eagles men who are going to fight for Mother Ghana in Mauritius,” she said.
The Ghana Rugby Football Union is also preparing for an upcoming under-12 invitational 7s tournament in Cote D’Ivoire. “Don’t forget the under-12 are also preparing for an invitational 7s in Cote D’Ivoire,” Miss Rafatu added. “We are hopeful they will perform well.”
