The Ghana Chess Association has reflected on a remarkable 2024 season, marked by significant milestones and achievements. Vice President Christiana Ashley shared the association’s highlights on GTV Sports+ Special’s “Year in Review” for 2024.
According to Ashley, 2024 has been one of the most successful years for Chess in Ghana. The association organized three major events: the African Games, the African Individual Chess Championship, and the Africa School Chess Championship. In addition to these international events, the association hosted local tournaments every weekend.
Ashley attributed the inclusion of Chess in the 13th African Games to the relentless efforts of the Ghana Chess Association and the financial support of the World Chess Federation (FIDE). “We fought hard to have chess included in the African Games,” she said. “FIDE came in to financially support us, covering almost all the financial costs. We are grateful for their support.”
The African Games proved to be a resounding success for Ghanaian chess players. The event’s success led to Ghana being awarded the hosting rights for the African Individual Chess Championship, which took place just a week after the Games. This, in turn, opened doors for Ghana to host numerous international chess events, with both the World and Africa Confederations expressing interest in partnering with the association.
