Humphrey Kofi Ayittey made history on a sunny day in Osu, Accra, by winning the maiden edition of the Duku Festival Cycling Race. The 51-strong field of cyclists, representing four regions of Ghana and one foreign cyclist from Italy, competed fiercely for the top honours.

As the cyclists embarked on the challenging 80.6-kilometre course, comprising 26 laps of 3.1 kilometres each, the crowd held their breath. The competition was intense, with each cyclist determined to claim the coveted title.

In the end, Humphrey Kofi Ayittey emerged victorious, crossing the finish line with a triumphant smile. Frank Akuffo followed closely, securing the second position, while Emmanuel Sessi took the third spot, earning the second runner-up title.

The four participating regions—Greater Accra, Eastern Region, Western Region, and Volta Region—showcased their talent and teamwork, with each cyclist giving their all. The lone foreign cyclist from Italy added an international flair to the event, demonstrating Ghana’s growing reputation as a hub for cycling enthusiasts.

The chairman of the Duku Festival Cycling Race, Justice Awuku, stated after the competition that he was pleased with the level of competition he witnessed in the maiden edition.

“We really wanted to create competition; from the look of things, it was very competitive, so I think our goal for the event has been achieved. This is my first time organising such a thing, so for me, it was very competitive, but I know it was nationwide or something; it would have been more than what we witnessed, but for starters, it’s ok.”

The chairman of the Duku Festival Cycling Race, Mr. Awuku, says they won’t stop at any moment and intend to do even better in the next edition.

“Next year, we intend to do it bigger; even before it gets to next year, I think we are talking to the sponsor, who wants to have a second look at it, and he wants to do something before next year, but next year, be rest assured that it will be bigger than what we witnessed today.”
