Accra Hearts of Oak have pulled off a major coup, announcing the appointment of Ghanaian legend Richard ‘Olele’ Kingson as the club’s new Goalkeepers’ Trainer.
The Phobians unveiled the 48-year-old on Monday, welcoming back one of the country’s most celebrated shot-stoppers to the club’s technical team.
“A legend returns. From guarding the post to grooming the next generation. Welcome home, Richard Kingson, our new Goalkeepers’ Coach,” the club posted.
From Black Stars hero to Phobians coachKingson’s name is etched in Ghanaian football history. He enjoyed a 15-year international career with the Black Stars, serving as the team’s No.1 during their most iconic World Cup runs.
He was between the sticks when Ghana reached the Round of 16 at Germany 2006 and the quarter-finals at South Africa 2010 — still the country’s best ever World Cup finish.
He also featured in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, earning Team of the Tournament honours in both 2008 and 2010.
At club level, ‘Olele’ started with Accra Great Olympics before taking his talent abroad. He enjoyed a long career in Europe with spells at Turkish giants Galatasaray, and in England with Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Blackpool. He also played in Sweden and Cyprus before returning to Ghana to round out his playing career.
Since hanging up his gloves, Kingson has transitioned smoothly into coaching. He has served as Ghana’s national team goalkeepers’ coach on two separate occasions — from 2017 to 2019 and again between 2021 and 2024 — working with multiple generations of Black Stars keepers.
That wealth of experience at the highest level is what Hearts are banking on as they reshape their technical team ahead of the new season.
The club believes his expertise will be crucial in strengthening the goalkeeping department and developing the next generation of talent at the 21-time league champions.
For Hearts of Oak, this is more than just a coaching appointment. It’s the return of a Ghanaian football icon to a big club in the domestic league — a move expected to inspire both players and fans.
