British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was injured in a car crash in Nigeria on Monday, with two people killed in the accident. The 36-year-old former world champion was a passenger in an SUV that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near Lagos around 12:00 local time.

According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), five adult men were involved, with the two fatalities being “male foreign nationals”. Joshua and the driver were rescued by the boxer’s security team. The FRSC suspects the SUV was speeding and lost control while overtaking, crashing into the truck.

The Lagos-Ibadan expressway is notorious for accidents, especially during festive periods. Joshua, with family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State, had been in Nigeria following his win over Jake Paul on December 19.

“I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted,” Paul posted on X. Joshua’s family, expecting him for New Year celebrations, said they’re hoping for his “speedy recovery” and offered prayers for the deceased. An investigation is underway.
