The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has launched an insurance policy for its referees, marking a significant milestone in the country’s football history. The policy, introduced on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at the GFA Secretariat, aims to provide comprehensive welfare support to match officials across Ghana’s domestic leagues.
GFA President, Kurt Okraku, described the launch as “a significant milestone in the journey of our football,” emphasizing the crucial role referees play in maintaining the integrity of the sport. He reiterated his commitment to improving the working environment of referees, stating,
“On that day, I assured you that the Football Association under my humble leadership would take bold and deliberate steps to elevate referee welfare, strengthen officiating standards, and provide the necessary protection and motivation for the men and women who uphold the integrity of the game.”
The insurance scheme, which covers 280 referees operating in the Premier League, Division One League, and Women’s Premier League, includes Group Life Cover, Critical Illness Protection, Permanent Disability Compensation, Medical Expenses Support, and Workmen’s Compensation. Additional benefits extend to referees’ families, including spouse, child, and parent benefits, as well as funeral support.
“This is not just an insurance policy; it is a social protection package,” Okraku stressed. “It is a statement that the GFA cares deeply about its referees, their families, and their future.”
Daniel Laryea, SWAG Referee of the Year, expressed gratitude on behalf of his colleagues, sharing his personal story of struggling with injury and financial burdens.
“I nearly quit refereeing because of this, because it was too much,” he said. “This policy is unprecedented, and we thank the GFA president and administration for this initiative.”
