The Scrabble Association of Ghana (SCAG) has officially launched the 2025 World English-Language Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC), set to take place from November 10-16, 2025, at the Eagles in Airport City, Accra.

This historic event will bring together 369 Scrabble players from 45 countries, showcasing Ghana’s growing influence in the global mind sports arena.

At the launch event held at Wanshi Gardens in Asylum Down, Accra, stakeholders and Scrabble enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the championship.

Mr. Reginald Laryea, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), highlighted the benefits of Scrabble, emphasizing its role in building vocabulary, patience, and strategic thinking.

“Scrabble is not just about tiles and racks; it’s about language, strategy, and education that builds vocabulary, patience, foresight, and resilience,” Mr. Laryea said.

Representing the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Gideon Hammond, Deputy Director of the National Sports Authority, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sports development in Ghana. He announced plans to integrate Scrabble into school sports and support federations through a newly approved sports fund.

“Scrabble is not only a sport; it’s an intellectual pursuit that shapes our thinking, strengthens our vocabulary, and builds a culture of patience, logic, and problem-solving,” Mr. Hammond stated.

“We want to see equity across all sports, and every discipline must have the opportunity to grow, attract investment, and inspire the next generation.”

As Ghana prepares to host the world’s best Scrabble players, stakeholders are calling for partnerships to support the championship. The event is seen as an opportunity to promote Ghana’s sports industry, inspire the next generation, and showcase the country’s hospitality.

Mr. Haruna Adams, President of SCAG, expressed his excitement about hosting the championship, saying, “It means a lot to us. We’re open for the world to come and play Scrabble.”

The WESPA Championship promises to be an exciting celebration of language, strategy, and culture, with Ghana poised to make a lasting impression on the global Scrabble community.
