The maiden Functional Sport tournament National Championship successfully concluded its first day on November 23, 2024, at the Zulka Astro Turf in Dansoman. Twelve athletes from six regions – Greater Accra, Western Region, Central Region, Bono Region, Ashanti Region, and Northern Region – participated in the event.
The championship, which normally consists of six stages, was divided into two sessions due to the intensity of the exercise. Day one featured the endurance test, mixed test, and bodyweight exercises, while the final day will consist of the Strength Test, Skill, and Power test.
According to Charles Owusu Ansah, President of Functional Fitness League Ghana, the aim of dividing the championship into two sessions is to give athletes sufficient rest, allowing them to return with fresh energy.
Speaking to the media, Ansah stated that their goal is to take fitness to the next level and prepare Ghana for the possibility of functional sport becoming an Olympic sport.
“Functional Sport is very tough; it’s the next level of fitness, and that’s what we’re trying to develop in Ghana,” Ansah said. “We want to move the nation to the next level, and by the time it becomes an Olympic sport, Ghana should be ready and prepared to compete.”
Ansah also encouraged the youth to take advantage of the sport, citing numerous job opportunities in Functional Fitness Sport.
The tournament offers various prizes for the winners, including a cash prize of GH¢ 1,500.00, a trophy, and products from sponsors for the winner.
