The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision was made by the GFA Executive Council in consultation with key stakeholders.

Queiroz, the former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran coach, will lead Ghana’s campaign at the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The veteran coach brings a rich World Cup pedigree to the role. He guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and took charge of Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.

His international résumé also includes stints with Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar — experience the GFA expects will prove vital on the world stage.

Queiroz begins work immediately to prepare the Black Stars for the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.

Ghana opens its Group campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, Canada, before facing England and Croatia in the remaining group matches.
