Ghana’s Wrestling Future Looks Bright as National Championships Conclude in Style

The Moshie Zongo park in Kumasi was abuzz with excitement on Saturday, March 28, 2026, as the Ghana Wrestling Association hosted its National Wrestling Championships. Over 200 athletes, including kids as young as 5, converged on the venue to showcase their skills and make their mark in the sport.

A staggering 95% of the participants were making their debut in wrestling, making the event a truly special one. The championships saw the participation of five regions – Greater Accra, Volta, Northern, Savannah, and Ashanti – and featured various weight categories, from the youngest age groups to the super heavyweights.

The atmosphere was electric, with wrestling enthusiasts cheering on the athletes and urging them to give their best.

Here are the results from the championships:

  • Girls 8 years: Laakicia Sampana (Gold), Adepa Glady (Silver), Kawsar Musar (Bronze)
  • Boys 9 years: Osman Ibrahim (Gold), Muneru Seidu (Silver), Ricardo Yentit (Bronze)
  • Girls 9 years: Ruwaida Ibrahim (Gold), Bethel Ayini (Silver), Nadiatu Muni (Bronze)
  • Boys 10 years: Nana Kwame (Gold), Adu Osei Ricard (Silver), Ohene Koranteng (Bronze)
  • Boys 11 years: Nasir Ali (Gold), Ibrahim Osei Owusu (Silver), Kosmos Obey (Bronze)
  • Girls 10-12 years: Bernice Kwane (Gold), Fadek Yahaya (Silver), Precious Asempah (Bronze)
  • Boys 12 years: Abdellah Abubakar (Gold), Mahamadi Ibrahim (Silver), Dickson Amoro (Bronze)
  • Boys Juniors 17 years: Madima Abdallah (Gold), Abdul Latif Yakubu (Silver), Ibrahim Nasir (Bronze)
  • Men Seniors: Abdul Razak Salim (Gold), Joshua Ashitey (Silver), Mohammed Hamidu (Bronze)

Nasir Ali was named the best male athlete, while 8-year-old Laakicia Sampana was adjudged the best female wrestler. Ashanti Region was honored as the best performing region, receiving a trophy for their outstanding performance.

Ghana Wrestling Association President, Mr. Norbert Amefu, expressed his delight at the turnout, saying, “I was expecting about 80 participants, but the number rose to more than 200. I thank the Ashanti Regional Wrestling Association for a wonderful job done in the region.”

The championships were a testament to the growing popularity of wrestling in Ghana, and it’s clear that the future of the sport is bright.
