Ghana’s emerging canoeing programme made a splash at the Africa Youth Games in Angola 2025, claiming a historic bronze medal in the 1000 metres Canoe Double (C2) event. Maxwell Ofoi and Okronipa Ohene Emmanuel, making their debut at the Games, paddled with courage and determination to secure third place among 12 nations.
The young Ghanaian duo defied expectations, matching established canoeing nations stroke for stroke and showcasing their endurance and mental toughness. Their bronze medal marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s growing canoeing programme.
Ghana Rowing and Canoeing Federation President, Mr Kamal Sulley, hailed the achievement as a major leap forward. “This is a remarkable improvement on our previous performance, and a clear indication that Ghana is moving in the right direction in rowing and canoeing,” he said.
The duo’s impressive performance has earned them a spot at a high-performance training camp in South Africa in January 2026, ahead of the Junior World Cup Championship in Poznań, Poland.
For a sport still in its early stages in Ghana, this bronze medal is a testament to the country’s potential and a source of inspiration for young athletes nationwide. It shows that with commitment and opportunity, Ghanaian athletes can compete and excel globally.
