Dodowa Crowned Champions: Ghana Koshien Championship Concludes with Dodowa’s Back-to-Back Win

The 2nd edition of the Annual Ghana Koshien Championship lit up the Ghana Koshien Field at Labone Senior High School on August 30-31, 2025, as junior high school teams battled for national glory. Five teams from four regions competed for pride and success, showcasing their skills and determination.

The teams that participated included Dodowa and Tema from the Greater Accra Region, Team Central Region, Team Eastern Region, and Volta Region. The group phase matches were played on Saturday, August 30, while the medal matches were decided on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

Defending champions Dodowa from the Greater Accra Region cemented their dominance in the tournament, beating a highly spirited side from Central Region to defend their title and become back-to-back champions. The final standings were as follows: Dodowa emerged as champions, Central Region took silver, Eastern Region claimed bronze, Team Tema finished fourth, and Team Volta Region placed fifth.

Kofi Halidu from Team Cape Coast was adjudged the male Most Valuable Player, while Abigail Aggrey from Tema won the female Most Valuable Player award. Central Region was recognized as the Baseballership Team of the tournament, and Kofi Salami from Cape Coast was voted Baseballership Coach of the tournament.

Mr. Shinya Tomonari, President of Japan Africa Baseball & Softball Foundation, expressed his excitement about the tournament’s progress. “This is the second time for the Ghana Koshien tournament, but I’m very surprised that many players are improving compared to last year. Many coaches and players are learning and conducting baseball on the field, and maybe many students are changing their lives through baseball, which makes me very happy.”

Mr. Ernest Danso, President of Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation, praised the tournament’s growth and impact. “I think it’s a great thing that we’re doing. The numbers are increasing, and the love for the game is also growing. It’s not just limited to Accra anymore, and the children are getting more involved than ever. I’m impressed by what I’m seeing so far, and I believe Koshien is here to stay.”

Mr. Albert K. Frimpong, President of Baseball and Softball Africa, echoed similar sentiments. “It’s exciting to see this tournament thriving. The Koshien project and baseballership teach kids valuable life skills, values, and principles that go beyond sports. I’m happy to see Ghana taking the lead, and I hope other countries will follow suit.”
