Ghana Athletics President Calls for Support to Maintain Athletes’ Form Ahead of World Championships

The President of Ghana Athletics, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, has expressed admiration for Ghanaian athletes in the USA, particularly after Abdul Rasheed Saminu’s record-breaking 100m dash performance of 9.86 seconds, making him the world leader in the event for 2025.

“This is a huge personal improvement and a huge endorsement for Ghana athletics,” Mr. Fuseini said. “It’s the first time a Ghanaian athlete has become the number one athlete in the world, and we’re proud of this achievement.

“Mr. Fuseini highlighted the impressive performances of other Ghanaian athletes, including Azamati’s 9.93 seconds and another athlete’s sub-10 seconds. “This is the first time we have two Ghanaian athletes running sub-10,” he noted. “We have five or six athletes capable of running sub-10, and we’re looking forward to more sub-10 performances.”

As the athletes prepare for the World Athletics Championships in September, Mr. Fuseini emphasized the need for support to maintain their form. “What we need to do is support them,” he said. “We have to look for money to help them get competitions to compete. If not, they will fall, and they won’t be able to maintain their form.

“Mr. Fuseini stressed the importance of financial support and access to competitions. “We need to support them financially and provide them with opportunities to compete,” he said. “If we can support them to maintain their current performance level, Ghana will have a good chance of getting a medal at the World Championship.

“With the European outdoor competition now open, Mr. Fuseini noted that Ghanaian athletes in the US will need to participate in European competitions to maintain their form. “If we leave our athletes in the US without them going to Europe, those who go to Europe will maintain their form, and our athletes will be left out,” he warned. “When they come to the World Championship, they’ll be facing athletes who have been competing and maintaining their form, which will put them at a disadvantage.”
