Ghana Athletics Holds Successful Open Championship

The Ghana Athletics held its first Open Championship at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday, February 15, 2025. The event saw a thrilling display of athletic prowess, with top athletes from across the country competing in various events.

Quansah Naseera Efua from Tachyon Athletik Ghana emerged victorious in the women’s 100M final, clocking an impressive time of 11.92s. Yeboah, Amanda Christiana from Goloe Athletics Club took second place with a time of 12.27s, while Afriyie Doris from UCC secured third place with a time of 12.59s.

In the men’s 100M event, Ansah Sarfo from Stagnation edged out Cudjoe Michael from Ghana Armed Force (GAF) to take the top spot with a time of 10.49s. Kwofie Joseph Andoh from Tachyon Athletik Ghana placed third.

Other notable winners included Mensah Janet from Stagnation, who took the women’s 200M title with a time of 24.68s, and Gadayi Edwin, the 2024 SWAG Athlete of the Year, who won the men’s 200M race with a time of 21.24s.

The event also saw impressive performances in the field events, with Otchere Yeboah Mensah from Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) taking the top spot in the men’s Long Jump with a distance of 7.64m.

Acting CEO of the Ghana Athletics, Mr. Ahmed Baffoe, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the event. “It’s been a very successful day, and we’re looking forward to the next Open Championship in April,” he said.

Athletes who competed in the event were optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season. Gadayi Edwin, who won the 200m race, said, “I’m continuing from where I left off last year, and I’m hoping to achieve even better results this season.”

Ansah Sarfo, who won the 100m race, added, “This is just the starting point of the season, and I’m hoping to achieve something better this season. I’m praying that I won’t get injured and that I’ll be able to achieve my personal best in all the competitions I participate in.”
