Ghana’s Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, is taking bold steps to address safety and security concerns in the country’s football stadiums. This move comes after a recent violent incident at a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko SC, which tragically resulted in the death of Yaw Frimpong.
In a meeting with the Ghana Football Association, Ghana League Clubs Association, and Premier League clubs, Dr. Akuffo-Dampare emphasized the Police Service’s commitment to finding solutions to improve safety and security. The meeting aimed to identify gaps in football policing and develop strategies for a safer environment.
Key outcomes from the meeting include:
- Appointment of Sports Security Officers: Sports Security Officers will be appointed in all 16 regions to link the Police Service with the Ghana Football Association.
- Establishment of a Sports Policing Unit: A dedicated Sports Policing Unit will be set up to focus on sports policing and engage with supporter groups.
- Inclusion of Sports Policing in Police Training: Sports policing will be included in police training courses, starting immediately.
- Intelligence Deployment and Fan Education: Intelligence will be deployed around teams, and a blueprint for fan education will be developed to promote a safer fan culture.
Dr. Akuffo-Dampare reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to addressing the issue, stating, “We are committed to fixing the problem… it’s our responsibility to protect the people of Ghana”. The Ghana Football Association has scheduled a follow-up meeting with Premier League clubs to further discuss safety and security measures.
