The General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shaban Mohammed, has expressed satisfaction with the federation’s achievements in 2024, despite falling short of its 100% target.
In an interview on GTV Sports+ Special’s “Year in Review” for 2024, Mohammed highlighted the federation’s successes, including the organization of the National Championship, the Prudential Cycling Event, and the Tour du Ghana. These events, he emphasized, were crucial to the federation’s goals and demonstrated its commitment to promoting cycling in Ghana.
Mohammed also discussed the federation’s developmental projects, which focused on coaching and training programs. He revealed that 66 athletes had transitioned into coaching roles, and that the federation had also conducted national commissaries training sponsored by the World governing body.
One initiative that Mohammed was particularly enthusiastic about was the school cycling project. Although the project faced some challenges, he noted that parental support had been increasing, with many buying bicycles for their children. Mohammed expressed optimism that 2025 would be a breakthrough year for cycling in schools.
In addition, the federation had introduced a cycling mechanic training program within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework. This initiative aimed to develop local expertise in bicycle maintenance and manufacturing, reducing reliance on foreign imports.
When asked about the new sports administration under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mohammed expressed confidence in the government’s ability to address the challenges facing national federations. He noted that the NDC’s manifesto committee had engaged with national federations, including the Ghana Cycling Federation, and was aware of their problems. Mohammed believed that the new administration would deliver on its promises and support the development of sports in Ghana.
