Ghana Athletics President Urges Government to Renovate El Wak Stadium

Ghana Athletics President, Bawah Fuseini, has urged the Government of Ghana to renovate the El Wak Sports stadium’s tartan tracks. He made this appeal during the launch of the 2024 SESSA Athletics championship at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate conference room on October 3, 2024.

Initially, the El Wak Sports Stadium was slated to host the 2024 SESSA Athletics championship. However, due to the poor condition of the tartan tracks, the organizers opted for the University of Ghana Sports stadium, which has hosted the competition after a decade-long hiatus.

During the launch, Bawah Fuseini explained why El Wak Sports Stadium couldn’t host the event: “We ask ourselves, why aren’t we hosting this at El Wak? It’s because of the track’s condition. We’re appealing to the government, through our board chairman and Acting Director General, Seth Pawun Boyoyo, to renovate El Wak and other facilities nationwide. This will alleviate pressure on the University of Ghana Sports stadium, reserving its world-standard tracks for international competitions while using El Wak and other stadia for domestic purposes.”

Fuseini continued, “We appeal to the Ministry and government to refurbish El Wak’s tracks, a hub for athletics and SESSA among security services. Renovating it will significantly boost athletics and sports development nationwide, as SESSA encompasses various disciplines beyond athletics.”

The 2024 SESSA games are scheduled for November 2-3, 2024, at the University of Ghana Sports stadium.
