The second week of the Tennis Foundation Ghana Open ITF J30 Accra tournament kicked off with exciting matches that saw players from around the world vie for spots in the next round. Here are the highlights from day one:

In the women’s singles, Benin’s Alao Dahlia Iyamonsola Fiona secured a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over Ghana’s Philipina Sewornu to progress to the second round. Togo’s Mazamesso Grace Tcamoussa also advanced, defeating USA’s Mbongta Awantang 6-1, 6-2.

Ghanaian players had mixed results. Hope Amartey K and Jesse Frank Abu from Great Britain teamed up to defeat Nigeria’s Mubarak Ayodeji Ganiyu and South Africa’s Ethan Andrew Pieber 6-4, 6-2, advancing them to the quarterfinals. Hanif Boateng and Kwame Obeng Entie also progressed to the quarterfinals, beating Benin’s Manel Adechokan Cornil Alao and USA’s Tchegoun Derosa 6-1, 6-2. However, Hanif Boateng fell to South Africa’s Ethan Andrew Pieber 6-2, 6-3 in the singles.

Other notable winners include Jiselle Okoye, who defeated Benin’s Conforte Dohami Oudensi 6-3, 6-2, and Succes Ogunjobi, who beat Ashleigh Hannah 6-1, 6-3. Great Britain’s Myah Chang Harper and Russia’s Leila Akhmetova also advanced to the second round.

In the men’s singles, Ghanaian champion Raphael Nii Nortey Dowuona built on his Week 1 success, dominating India’s Rohan Karthik Vunnam 6-0, 6-1. Ivory Coast’s Moye Lucas Nadal Koffi, seeded No. 6, edged India’s Arjun Rathi 7-6(4), 6-1. Ghana’s Donatus Ayaaba defeated USA’s Tchegon Derosa 6-2, 6-3, while Togo’s Francois-Xevier Mawuko beat Ghana’s Aaron Armaah 6-2, 7-6(7).

Other winners in the men’s singles include Nigeria’s Mubarak Ayodeji Ganiyu, who defeated Madagascar’s Mahery Raoily 6-3, 6-0, and India’s Aditya Mor, who beat Great Britain’s Henry Beer 6-2, 6-4.

The tournament continues with more thrilling matches, as players compete for the top spots in Accra.
