At the 30th Ordinary Session Congress held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed concerns about the current standards of refereeing in Ghanaian football. He highlighted that recent internal assessments revealed worrying trends, with some referees scoring as low as 20% in proficiency tests, and others achieving a mere 3.5%.
To address these issues, the GFA plans to implement stricter measures, including mandatory pre- and post-match assessments, enhanced training programs, and a comprehensive review of the referee selection process. The GFA President emphasized the need for referees to be well-versed in the laws of the game and announced plans to downsize the current referee list to include only those who demonstrate a thorough understanding and commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport.
“Refereeing should be competitive and professional,” the GFA President stated, underscoring the association’s commitment to elevating the standards of officiating in the Ghana Premier League and beyond.
