Known for his goalscoring prowess, the former Pyramids and Al Ahly forward John Antwi reflects on his mission in Egypt and the vision that led to his fame in the north African country.
In an interview with ace broadcaster Professor George Kuntu Blankson, he said, “Money wasn’t all, but the real motivation was to get to the top, and a lot of sacrifices went into that. Remember, they’re a Muslim country, and for you to be accepted, you have to abide by their rules, especially during their fasting periods. They sleep in the morning and train in the evening.
The first club I signed for was Ismaily, then Al Ahly, Misr Lel Makassar, and then Pyramids. I made a solid impact by scoring over 100 goals; it’s a record by an African player in the league.
I won the league twice with Al Ahly, played the Champions League with them, and then at Pyramids, I played in the final of the Confederations Cup.
