On Friday, July 26, 2024, the Ghana Armwrestling Federation organised an open Armwrestling championship titled ‘Friday Night Armwrestling’ at Teshie Salem Square.
The competition saw 71 pullers competing for glory, divided into five categories. There were 23 females and 48 males, with the females competing in the lightweight and heavyweight divisions, while the males competed in the lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight divisions. All five categories proved to be very competitive events on the day.
In the women’s lightweight division, May Yeboah proved to be the strongest in the group, going the night without a defeat to clinch first position. She outstaged the double gold medalist from the 13th African Games, Blessed Abeka Nunoo, beating her twice on the night, which showcased her determination and resilience.
Daniel Acquah showcased his experience on both the continental level and the local scene to claim gold in the final at the expense of the highly touted force, Leonard Tetteh, who had a good competition on the night but fell short to Daniel Acquah.
One of the most competitive categories in African Armwrestling is the men’s middleweight division. Godwin Sackey, who represents Ghana Immigration, has strongly become one of the forces to be reckoned with in that category ever since he entered the scene as a professional puller, winning gold at the 13th African Games. Godwin never backed down, maintaining his top-notch performance throughout the night to win another gold medal in his Armwrestling career, defeating one of the most experienced pullers, Isaac Nii Amugi.
The women’s heavyweight division was a very competitive category, but police officer Grace Mintah, who hasn’t been defeated on the continental level for three years in a row, winning two gold medals in the African Games, gave no one a chance to beat her. Despite facing stiffer opposition on the night, her experience and performance kept her unbeaten run intact. Even Afia Entumi Kumah tried to unseat her, but her efforts were not enough to defeat Africa’s finest, Grace Mintah, on the night.
Ghana’s Golden Arms captain, Edward Asamoah, who also serves as the captain for the Ghana Immigration team, defended his pride as the leader by beating every puller on the day. Asamoah’s consistent performance on both the local and continental levels made it impossible for him to lose to the experienced and determined Issah Kunya in the final. Edward Asamoah had also won two gold medals at the recent African Games in Accra.
